Before UR
Kevin has some specific needs, and there are things he can't do. At other gyms, he says, "it would be a negative thought for me, so I wouldn't go to the gym."
What changed
At UR the coaches sort out a programme that fits his very specific needs. He doesn't do the classes, but he never feels left out. That's why he has been coming for six or seven years.
For Kevin it's all about the community. "You don't think you're going to the gym. You think you're going to meet your friends on a Sunday morning, and you do a bit of workout at the same time."
His advice
"Come in, please, because your nerves will disappear as soon as you walk in the door. People are friendly. They'll ask about you. They want to know all about you."
“Your nerves will disappear as soon as you walk in the door.”

Kevin: My name is Kevin. I'm 62 years old. Yes, I know, I don't look it. And I've been coming to the gym now for at least the last six years, maybe seven, and I'm really enjoying it.
Kevin: There's only one reason I come to the gym, and that's the community. I get accepted. I come into the gym, I can do what I like, I can do my bits. Obviously they've got some fantastic trainers, Nikki and Russ and James. They look after you and they'll sort out a programme for you that fits your very specific needs. And I do have some specific needs. That's the reason I don't go to the classes, because I can't do various things. But I don't feel left out. Whereas at other gyms, I don't think I'd get that, and it would be a negative thought for me, so I wouldn't go to the gym. That's why I've been coming here for so long.
Kevin: It's a community. It's like Cheers: everybody knows your name. They do. So it's great.
Kevin: Come in, please, because your nerves will disappear as soon as you walk in the door, because people are friendly. They'll ask about you. They want to know all about you. They're actually bloody nosy, but it's great. It's not a gym. You don't think you're going to the gym. You think you're going to meet your friends on a Sunday morning, and you do a bit of workout at the same time, so you get that bonus.
Kevin: And for some people, if you're at work and you're busy and you're not seeing people or talking to people, come in on a Saturday or a Sunday, or even an evening. It takes you away from your work environment and you can start opening up and chatting to people about stuff. That's what I like it for, because I come in and have a good old chat.
