What changed

Six months in, Sylvia's biggest change is confidence: the confidence to walk in, try a different class, and know that she'll either manage it or the trainers will be there with tips.

She never thinks "I've got that class tonight" any more. "It's 'I want to come in', and I'm always looking to book the next class as soon as it comes out on the app." She's lost a bit of weight too, and knows what to eat to keep her going.

Why it feels different

"You only need to be coming to a class two or three times and then people know your name." As somebody her age, she relates to the pictures on the wall. There are no rooms full of very young, very fit people making you feel you shouldn't be there.

She compares it to her tennis club: a club mentality, where people know you and you feel welcome.

Her advice

"What have you got to lose? It is friendly. You don't feel intimidated. Just come in and see how it feels."

“You only need to be coming to a class two or three times and then people know your name.”

Sylvia: Sylvia, 54. I've been coming here since June this year, I believe. So what's that, six months? Six months.

Sylvia: I feel more confident now. I think that's the main thing. It's more confidence in being able to come in and try a different class and know that I'll either be able to do it, or the trainers will be there and be sympathetic if you can't, and give you those kinds of tips.

Sylvia: But I think it's the people around you as well, because you only need to be coming to a class two or three times and then people know your name. They ask how you are. It's that feeling. I've got more confidence to come in and train, and therefore I want to come in. I never think, 'Oh, I've got that class tonight.' It's 'I want to come in', and I'm always looking to book the next class as soon as it comes out on the app. So I feel a bit more motivated, and just generally more confident in everything.

Sylvia: I feel like I look a little bit better. I've lost a bit of weight. And even though I haven't lost a lot of weight, and I might not continue to lose weight all the time, I know what I need to eat in order to keep me going for the day.

Sylvia: What have you got to lose? I think that's the main thing. It is friendly. You don't feel intimidated. I think it's the environment, and also, probably as somebody of my age, I relate to the pictures on the wall. I love the music. I love the fact that you don't come in and see lots of very young, fit people, where you feel like you shouldn't be here.

Sylvia: So just come in and see how it feels. It is a warm, friendly, welcoming space. It's not a club, but it's got that club mentality. I compare it to the tennis club that I use as well, where people do know you and you feel welcome there. So that's what I'd say: what have you got to lose? Just come and give it a go.
